A scanned picture is made up of dots, just like a picture that appears on a television or is printed on a printer.  The density of the dots, measured as dots per inch (dpi), indicates the resolution level.  The HP PictureScan software automatically selects the resolution level, matching it to the resolution level of the specified printer (often 300 or 600 dpi for drawings).  For photographs, the scanning resolution is typically set to 100 or 150 dpi regardless of the resolution of the specified printer because a higher scanning resolution does not improve the quality of the final printed picture, but does increase memory requirements.
